John Barone, B.A. 2010

2010 Major: Religious Studies and History

How has being a Religion graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"I have served overseas in countries all over Asia which observe different faiths and the same faiths in different ways. Understanding how faith develops through history and how it interplays with culture has made me a far more astute partner to the allies of the United States."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Religion programs?

"Think broadly about how your studies can apply. Religion courses can help you in the future as you work with HR departments, work in international relations, or are eating lunch with a coworker. Religion matters in more ways than serving as clergy, so think broadly about how you can empathize and demonstrate tolerance through what you will learn."
