GANDHI'S MODERNITY

RELIGION 777

How did Gandhi engage modernity? This course offers a view of Gandhi as a passionate critic of modernity while also radically modern. Do traditional concepts of the ashram, the ascetic, and homespun fabric express Gandhi's vision of a modern utopia or an actualizable political future? Unpacking discourses of development, secularism, and capitalism, the course explores how Gandhian praxis reformulates the modern through self-transformation and a program for the collective good. Note: This class is taught at the Federal Correctional Complex, in Butner, NC. Interested students will be required to pass a background check and attend a mandatory training. Instructor: Prasad
